Qualitative research is the "touchy, feely" part of our business. Usually involving individual face-to-face interviews, diads, triads or regular-sized focus groups, qualitative research enables us to dig deep to fully understand how people think, feel and behave. It also provides us with access to a particular target group's "lingo", so that subsequent quantitative research questions may be properly formulated.
Quantitative research is the "number crunching" part of our business. Usually conducted by means of a telephone survey or an on-line survey, quantitative research enables us to statistically measure awareness, usage, attitudes and behaviours. Qualitative research is often used as input to quantitative research because it allows us to fully understand a particular subject prior to quantitatively validating the working hypotheses that are generated in qualitative research.
